The only time my horses had horrible ticks to where i couldn't ride them was when I lived in oklahoma. I now live back hom in cali on the central coast and they never get ticks. The dogs do but I haven't ever had a horse in cali have ticks before. Move to cali! that will solve your problem.lol jk. I don't know...i had that problem in OK. sucked riatafaline

I add garlic & apple cider vinegar to the feed for my horses... works for ticks & flies. Good Luck.

CCG55 has the right idea for an infestation - the Adams spray you can get at Wal-Mart...and it works like a charm!! Ticks will dry up and fall off...also fleas! I think it must 'tingle' a little as my dogs aren't thrilled at getting applications!! Since I live in 'Tick-Heaven', have 3 horses and 2 dogs...Adams (or anything else) gets expensive!! For prevention, mix equal parts water and vinegar - the horses (people and dogs) smell like a pickle, but it really works when you ride thru the woods and brushy areas! Instead of having 100+ ticks on you...there 'might be' one really adventurous tick!!

Thanks everyone for the advice... A friend put a spot-on treatment on her the other day and i think it may be starting to work. Tho it is taking a while. I also sprayed her down with a fly/tick spray. I am seeing that some are falling off dead as well as me pulling some off carefully. I also had someone tell me to get a sulfer block. Amazingly, she was licking it like it was going out of style. Not sure if that will work, but at least I know that she was needing it.

dish soap will cause them to back out,but it can be time consuming if you have that many .

I agree with Lance. Injectable Ivermectin will not work on ticks. I use a pour on Permectin. It works great.

I use a pour-on product for fly control called PORIDON. It is available through vets or a vet supply store. It also works great on ticks. You pour a line of the gel from the poll (top of neck) to the dock of the tail. I've used it on tick-infested horses and by the 2nd day after the application, the ticks are reduced to a dead, dried out husk. Just brush or rub them off. The PORIDON works on fly control for about 10 days at a time. Jacquie

There is a product called Boss that will knock the ticks off. Also Delice works well. It is cheaper, but it will take the hair off about 1 horse in 50. Don't know why that happens it just does. The hair grows back right away, but if freezing or sun-burn might be a problem you need to be prepared for that.

I have never had a horse with that many ticks on them, but I use Adams Flea & Tick Spray on my horse for ticks, and also to prevent them when we ride where they are likely to get into them. There used to be an Adams Spray for horses, and it was the same formula that is the Adams for dogs....they quit making the spray for horses, so I just buy the dog spray now. They do have a shampoo also, but I would ask a vet before I used it to bathe my horse. Hope you find a solution that works.
