Admin...Thanks SO much for saving these topics.
There is such a wealth of info saved on here, put there by some true-blue horse folk. (This is not the first time I have looked over what others had to say about a various subjects)
My older mare has been getting stiff and a bit testy and needed some refference on what others have tried.
Mission accomplished. Thinking I'm prolly on the right track (based on the thread of course) and learned of other options I may need later. :)
*she's 23 now*
Thanks to all for sharing the "good stuff".

Like many of you, I have tried most of the joint supplements on my horses at one time or another. I was currently using a popular liquid when my 15yo barrel horses was becoming a problem shoeing his back feet. I took him to my vet. After injecting both hocks, my vet told me he did not believe the feed-thru's were as good as the injectable, due to the digestion process, poor absorption & assimilation, etc., etc. His recommendation? a yearly boost of Adequan to prevent this problem. - 2 inj., one month apart. I used Adequan in the past and had good luck with it, so for $50/shot I brought home and injected him a week later, then a month later. No more sore joints.
So I will save the trouble of feed-thru, and save my money for the adequan!
Also, to those of you who believe in and use MSM - did you know it is derived from DMSO??? yes, both are a by-product of the wood/paper industry, are very natural products w/sulfur, are very cheap to produce, and have wonderful health benefits.
This is my story, and I'M STICKIN' WITH IT!!!!!!
Good luck with whatever you decide...

I have a friend that swears by Next Level. She has a 20 plus year old gelding that was starting to show signs of slowing down and stiffness in his walk.It took him a while to get up if he laid down.He just wasn't him self.Of course at 20 plus to a horse is kinda like you or I at 70 plus.
She started using Next Level on him and within a matter of a week or so he was back to his old self again.
Her husband even used it because of his joints being so stiff from his line of work where he was stooping and bending all day long.It has been helping him and now even the cold winter weather doesn't slow him down(her husband).
You can buy in through alot of you larger feed and tack stores or through a vet supply.
Next Level has my vote.If I had not seen it with my own eyes the change in her horse I would never have believed it.
Good luck on making you choice and finding what will work best for your horse.

I wanted to throw one more suggestion into the mix. Cetyl M (cetyl myristoleate) has given me fantastic results with my guy who had a stifle injury and on and off windpuffs and swelling in his back legs - stiffness, dragging, etc. I had tried a few different, very high quality MSM, Glucosamine, and Chondritin products with little to no results. The results with Cetyl M were almost immediate and I use it as maintenance now. For us, it has been amazing. It's also being used by a friend for a young dog with congenital hip dysplasia who was having a hard time just moving around - now he plays and jumps on/off the couch. It won't break the bank either. I don't work for the company, I promise!!!

I hope you find something that works as well for you...

One product I used and was and still are amazed at how it worked was Rapid Response by Amerdon.
My thoroughbred mare had been in really bad shape and fortunately, read about this Rapid Response on some horse newspaper, I bought it ( little expensive), but to this day, she is competing in higher levels (jumping) and I am sooooo glad I came across the product. Check it out on: www.amerdon.com they will refer you to a specialist who will tell you how to use it. The doctor that helped me was Debrah Kahn. Good luck. Most products take a while to work, this thing is like a miracle.

To give you some information for Joint Health, you can go to www.shaklee.net/garey and go to Pain, which will take you to Joint Health Complex.
Shaklee is an all natural product, its origanally used for people, but some of our products can be used on horses. Basic-H (cleaner) can be used for Fly Spray..you mix 1/4 to 3/4 water in a spray bottle. Its awesome!
Joint Health Complex is awesome for horses with joint problems, arthritis, and continuing healthy maintenance. It helps to cushion the joints and rebuild cartlidge.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me thru my website or 502-724-6342
Thank you,

For what it's worth, a dietician told me that MSM has no level of toxicity; all that happens if you or your horse take more than your metabolism can use, is the urine takes on a slight sulfur odor. MSM is more than a mere anti-inflammatory; it enhances the ability of individual cell walls to take in nutrients and expel wastes - which is why it has the anti-inflammatory effect.
