The Amine 2/4 D is what most feed/fertilizer/herbicide dealers would recommend. It will kill weeds but not the grass. Farmers use it and it's very effective if you do it correctly. You need to measure it according to directions, and how you apply it is important. It needs to be applied on a healthy weed/thistle, etc... not after you've mowed them down. This will allow the herbicide to get into the root of the plant, and kill it. Wait about 3 days before horses are turned out on pasture, and wait about 2 weeks after spraying before you mow. (Most horses won't bother eating weeds if good grass is available, but I keep mine up a few days just to be safe.) A second application may be necessary (I spray in spring and fall) if you have a heavy infestation of weeds.
