You could move to Idaho where we don't have that. Hi desert country is the answer.

betadine has a great track record for helping clear it--we have seen results with a "head and shoulders" bath and then follow up with spritzing diluted betadine solution (any povidine iodine will do as mentioned). good idea to bleach your brushes afterwards and a good time to clean blankets and pads. listerine seems to help as does apple cider vinegar----if it is caught after the rain stops and while it is in the early stages----i have noticed a connection between my 2 mares not being nearly as affected as the horses they are running with currently----my mares are on a hoof supplement and the others are not----the one that gets regular brushing throughout the week actually does not have it yet but due to breaking out really bad to mosquitoes i always spritz her with ACV after i brush her. it makes sense to me, just a thought. they also get ACV in their feed. just as we were planning a clean up the "rot" day here came the rain. did get a bad case of "scratches" cleared up with MTG before the rains came in last week and i will probably get a chance to try that again!!!LOL. todays rain will just complement last weeks 14 1/2 inches down here in my low spot!!! in rare cases where a secondary bacterial infection has developed under the scabs the horse may need a run of antibiotics to totally clear it---had a vet mention the other day that he had seen several that had gone to that stage(probably because it is still raining) and without the meds in the system the folks could just be treating the same initial case of it over and over. just a thought on it if after trying several topical treatments it does not clear up.

Cindy, I have the same problem! I have fought it on one of my horses over a year. I applied betadine many times, but it keeps coming back! It now covers his entire back and hips, a large area and hard to treat. The betadine keeps his hair from falling out, but the bumps are still there or come back after I rub them out. I don't use the bleach, it is too caustic and poisonous. Any other suggestions? I thought about diluting Tea Tree Oil and spraying it on, it is anti-fungal. Has anyone tried this? Darn rain. I think we are living in the new American Rain Forest! LOL Vicky

I also had good luck with Betadine when I was in Texas. I don't have rain rot here in the desert...I haven't seen not one drop of rain in one full year !

Hey Plus, I've had GREAT results from the Cowboy Magic Rain Rot Shampoo and Krudbuster. Good luck, Debbie

I've also used the Betadine/Iodine medicated shampoos for rain rot. Another old time/inexpensive treatment that works is to mix 1 part bleach with 10 parts water, and spray it on the affected areas. (This also works well with what is commonly called "scratches"... that crusty, scaly skin horses get on their lower legs from heavy dew in the grass in warm weather.) Yes, it may sting a little bit, but no more than any other medicated shampoos. Use any of these things sparingly, just every few days or so, don't overdo it. The point of any of these treatments is to kill the fungus in the skin and dry it out quickly. Jacquie

Cindy, When I was in Indiana that was a yearly problem. I soaped them up good with betadine shampoo. Then let them stand for about 20 minutes before rinsing. It would take 2 or 3 times. If it's too cool for a bath, they make sprays that you can spray on the affected area. Good luck. Nickie
