Having Apps w/long tails and manes, I was heartbroken when a boarded yearling chewed 2 tails and manes off! Good feed and nutritional balance. I use Frontline for ticks, but the vet said that will also help with any concerns of pinworms. I have the MTG, but it says not to leave on when exposed to sunlight. My horses are pastured, and I am not putting a tail bag on out in the woods. Time is the next major part. Calista's tail was to the ground before this happened, last year it was just a stub, now it is tail (maybe short, but it's growing). An article I read said that it takes 7 YEARS to grow a tail back!!! If you find anything that really works, let me know please. Thanks, AAA Apps

Here's my experience talking - Nutrition, nutrition. -Hollys right! I found a new product a few mos. back I really like. "HorseShine", which is full of omega 3's (4:1 vs. omega 6's) from flax seed. It was voted the "product of the year" & "best in nutrition" by the Horse Journal. One bag = 3mos. supply for one horse. (Omega 6's raise inflammation in the body, so it is best to avoid them.) It contains 18%protein, 30%fat, lots of vitamins & minerals, incl. calcium needed to balance the protein. I have fed it for 6 mos now, and one of my horses has the longest tail ever! It never got past his hocks in the 15 yrs I have owned him, until now! My daughter even noticed it! What a shock, and the only thing we changed is his supplement. I buy it thru Tractor Supply, but found it on-line: http://www.omegafields.com/ Good Luck!

It's called MTG and boy does it smell! Wear gloves or you'll never get the smell off.

There is an MG product...can't think of the name of it (have a bottle at the barn I use..has worked to stop rubbing of itchy tail heads and has strengthened and caused faster growth of mane and tail). This can be purchased at most tack stores or tractor supply....it's a fairly popular product that you rub into the mane and tail and helps produce fast growth....the product settles out so has to be well shaken before you use it and I believe it has sulfur in it...might be worth a try!

Well, good nutrition, effective parasite control for pinworms, and no young horses that will eat his tail and mane. Hair grows . . . and it's protein . . . Depending on the age and genetics . . . and the time of year and quality of nutrition, the horse's tail may be full or thin, short or long . . . but it will grow back with time, as JoeMike said. And if you are concerned about cosmetics in the meantime, you can always get him a "hair piece." :) . . .

Hi everybody. I was wondering if someone could help me. I recently bought a horse who had been out in pasture with approx 80 other horses for the last few years. The guy who sold him says the other horses beat up on him a lot and his mane and tail were either matted or chewed off so much that he just cut it off because it looked so bad. The gelding really does have practically only nubbs left. He is an awesome horse but looks HORRIBLE right now! Does anybody know anything that works for sure to help grow these out before I spend hundreds of dollars on 20 different things that don't? Thanks for your help.
