Oh,yes, I forgot to mention. Give the horse a gram or two of Phenylbutazone every day for the first week or two for pain and inflamation.

I have dealt with many suspensory injuries. First it needs to be cooled out with cold water, ice and poultice for a week or two. When the heat is mostly out of it, you need to put a blister on it. Reducine works well (follow the instructions on the can), or Cedarwood oil, painted on the leg with a brush. (If you do not have a leg paint brush a medium bristled toothbrush will do. The leg will swell up quite a bit with Cedar oil, wrapping the leg is optional. Paint for 5-7 days, until you have a good scurf on the leg. The horse should be walked every day if he's not too lame, but no strenuous work for at least a month. After you finish the blister, start painting the leg with an iodine based paint such as Ball's Solution until the swelling goes down, and start wrapping the leg every day. If the leg seems too irritated by the paint, you can sweat it with one of the available horse products and some Saran Wrap. Good Luck!

Talk to the attending veterinarian as treatment depends on the severity and location of the tear. Stall or small paddock is a must for a time, if the tear is bad then it can be 4-5 months, sometimes longer. Shockwave, though expensive, is amazing as an analgesic and also as a way to heal the tendon more quickly. Tendons and ligaments do not have a good blood supply as muscles usually do. Find a good bodyworker(massage therapist) who has had previous success with this type of injury. Anything to increase the circulation will help and keeping the shoulder, forearm and knee loose aids in healing as well as working the rest of the horse to avoid compensation issues In time, treadmill work will definitely help First, talk to the attending veterinarian

I have a friend who's got a horse with a torn suspensory tendon. I've never dealt with that particular type of injury. Has anybody out there dealt with this type of injury and do you have any recommendations as to the best treatment? Thanks, Vicki
