Help and Advice Needed - healing wire cuts

Hi Just an update. Took Bengie up to Liverpool University Equine Hospital. He is being treated by Prof. Derek Knottenbelt. Turns out the barbed wire had damaged both hind cannon bones causing a section on each to die. That is the reason they would not heal. If his previous owner had cared about him and had him treated straight away he would not have had this problem. This afternoon they are going to use a procedure called versajet to debraid both wounds back to the bone and remove the damaged parts of the bones. Then proper healing can begin and if necessary skin grafting at the end. They are hoping to do the entire procedure under standing sedation as general sedation will require them putting both legs in fixed casts so he does not risk breaking them when he regains consciousness. So right now we are praying that everything goes well. If anyone out there would like to include Bengie in their prayers i and my daughter would appreciate it. Michelle

Pearl - You have had some very good help here. I love ES, it is a great tool when you are in need. Most of the products mentioned are great to help kill the proud flesh (caustic) and allow the skin to produce healthy cells and regrow - and most horses will respond to these. However, your pony has issues with producing the healthy skin to cover the opening, and caustic products will kill those new cells as soon as they form. We seldom whirlpool wounds in hospitals, the water kills the new skin cells, so don't use water unless you have to clean off mud. Colodial silver is natural, boosts healing and the immune system. MSM is natural, comes from wood, and is a form of sulfur that helps stop inflammation in the body. Tea tree oil is natural and good for minor cuts, but has caustic properties that will burn the new skin cells, too. Can you buy an aloe vera plant? The juice comes in a pure liquid form in pharmacy's here, but is not as good as the plant. Aloe vera is known as the "fruit of the gods" and I use it every time I or one of my horses gets cut. It is amazing how fast wounds heal, it stops pain, and hair follicles regrow. The plant grows fast, and will heal acne, is antifungal, antiseptic, antibacterial, and is truly a gift from God. It will heal your pony's leg, but you must cut a section of leaf & squeeze the juice out onto the wound at least 2x's daily, more often if possible. If the juice is exposed to air, the mannose will denature in an hour and won't be as effective, so cut it fresh. If you can get a plant, it will heal your pony's leg. If your vet does the skin graft, use the aloe on that, too, it will heal much faster. Vicky

Pearl... And y'all are gonna laugh - but its been the BEST remedy for bad cuts, and healing I've ever used!! Started w/a mare who cut her chest on a fence, and we ended up (after trying stitches...) cutting a 8" flap of skin off... She healed completely, with barely a scar - you had to know it was there to find it!! PREPARATION-H - yeah...the hemmoroid stuff!! I've used it on any number of cuts, rips, puncture wounds, etc. It is relatively sticky, and will adhere to the wound, keeps flies off, and prevents proud-flesh from forming ('...shrinks swollen tissues...'. Can get it most any where, too!!

Thank you for your help. I am going to give them a call later today. Just got to get the time difference right. We are so limited to what is available over here due to EU Rules. They have even banned things like citronella and lavender from horse products. From experience vets over here are only interested in cases they can solve easily or the owners have plenty money. In this case it is neither so they are not really interested. Sad really as Bengie is a wonderful pony that deserves a chance. You guys are all great. Michelle

Bob...Amen on the Underwoods......I have not seen a product that that even comes close to this stuff...you just have to spray it on and throw baking powder on the wounds..don't weaken and keep with it at least twice a day..You will not get Proud Flesh if you use this stuff either.... We have many tools available to us if we use them...The Compound X and the Blood Root paste also do their thing well... Randy

I am sure all of these remedies work... however there is only one i have been using the last 10 years, since i came to oklahoma.. my friend makes it here and ships and sells it all over the country.. you can write to him his name is Buddy Underwood, Wynnewood, Oklahoma 73098 will get him.. its about 20 a bottle last i knew, plus shipping... put that on your wound.. use a spray bottle, but make sure and rinse your sprayer out with water or its a goner.. after you spray it on.. throw baking powder on it.. i dont care how bad the cut is.. it will heal in no time.. i have had some bad ones.. including a colt that got caught in a tornado, 2x4 in at the hip and out between his front legs.. and my wife at the time, saved her.. hope all your cuts are scratches, lol Bob

Hi, If you can get the old fashioned brown bottle lysol and mix it with water soak the injury. If not try Tea Tree Oil. I think this would be my first try. I use this a lot on my stock. You can mix it with a little extra virgin olive oil. I usually mix heavy on the TTO. You can douse it with some Colodial Silver, before you put the TTO on . I've tried a ton of other things but this is my favorite stuff. You can also try MSM and douse the area with a paste or just the powder. Depends on if it is oosing or not. I love the wound balm this gal talks about azprettypaints. Slather this on and don't wrap it more than 6 to 8 hours at a time. This is not only good for what needs a healing in the equine world, its really good for just about everything. Lessens the scarring tremendously. I sure hope you have had some luck with all this. Take care

Hi all Just thought i would update you on the progress on Bengie's legs. After trying everything i could get my hands on over here in the UK nothing has worked. We have got the wound down to about 1 inch but it has stopped closing over. After speaking to our vets they are going to speak to the equine specialists at Liverpool University Equine hospital requesting skin grafts be performed on his legs. I and my daughter are praying for a miracle. I will keep you posted. Michelle (pearlgirl)

Try mixing the honey with 20% betodine ointment, 30% honey 70% betodine, it's called sugerdine, and will promote healing very fast, honey has been used in meds since BC. Hoss
