Hi I have never had issues with Quest. I personally like quest. I have had people tell me that they have wormed horses that are full of worms and that they have almost died from quest. I have also had people tell me that they gave just a little over that amount suppossed to give and almost killed their horse. But duh that could happen with any i guess but have heard from vets that quest is alot stronger.
Now for tube worming. I like to tube worm. Alot of vets dont its a hassle they dont like to do. Plus it puts them liable if something happens to the horse.
If I have one that is really wormy I will either tube worm or do the panacur 5 day pak thats good but expensive.... works wonderful

OK...Sorry for the pun...but I am going to open up another can of worms here!
What about tube worming? I always thought that was the best and now vets refuse to do it. I would do that once a year in the spring, then paste wormer from then on. Seem to just work well. They say the tube wormers now days are just as good. Any opinions here?

Joyryder,
With only one horse at your house you shouldn't have that many problems with worms. My horse is in the same setup. I clean up any mature from his stall and drylot once a day as I believe proper stall management is essential. Good luck with your new setup. If you have any questions feel free to send a e-mail.

I'm amazed at the different opinions on worming. I'm relocating my horse from the stable to my house. I live in NY, and this is definately something I should understand better. 1 vet I had met told me all wormers are toxic and less is better. He worms his own horses (he has 2) twice a year, Fall and Spring. Another friend with 2 horses told me he only uses a wormer if the fecal sample tests positive (this was also a vet's advice). Most of the local stables worm every 6 weeks, but from what I've read here the reason is probably either because they have a changing group on small pastures; or because "that's the way it is always been done". I still don't know what course to take, but thanks for the info.

I have used quest in the past and haven't heard of anyone having problems with it. What sort of problems? I have also used Equimax and was very happy with it. I use it at least once a year and then rotate with ivermectin and safegaurd. A friend of mine told me that if you have a horse with a really bad case of worms, you can give him small doses of safegaurd everyday for thirty days and the horse will get rid of every worm he has including tapes. I haven't had a need to try that but, he has done it several times in the past with no side effects, unless you call fat, slick, healthy horses a side effect. lol. Kuntrygal

The intervals between worming depends on how many horses in the drylot or pasture, how big the pasture is, drylot and pasture management (How often is the area cleaned or harrowed), and many other factors. I worm my horse 4 times a year because he is alone or sometimes with just one other horse. What I use for a wormer is:
1. intermectin in the fall and early spring to get the bots.
2. strongid once in the year, most of the time in the summer, for those really ugly worms.
3. Equimax once a year for tapeworms.
That seems to work for me and never had a problem with the wormer not working because of the worms builting immunity.
I will not use Quest. There a potential to cause problems and there are to many other good wormers out there so why use that one.

Just a word of advice if your horses have a good hair coat (slick summer coat) sometimes if you give them liquid ivermeticin you will make their hair grow and get dull. I usually use liquid when I am coming out of winter and want my horse to slick off .
another fyi
be careful and dont over dose on quest. It is a very good product but unlike the others you really need to be careful with it.
