Thank you all for your thoughts and suggestions. The barn manager is going to go back to his previous diet and see what happens over a period of 2 weeks. Has anyone heard of "Cool Calories" feed? TBs, sheesh. I need me a quarter horse ;-0

Hoss referenced: >www.safergrass.org< Yes, Katie's site is EXCELLENT. If you do look into Beet Pulp, get the kind w/o molasses. Just FYI, pellets can contain a lot of filler/by products that can affect the metabolism of certain horses. Some do fine, some can get tipped over the edge. Good luck, Kathy

pellets still can cause increase in energy depends on what percentages are in it .. what type you feeding him? Good quality hay, No alfalfa .stick to 10% not 12%.steer clear of OATS AND OAT BASED feed for it is hot energy and will not add wieght .they burn it as fast as they eat it.Id try the corn based pellets for weight issues.( just my opinion) and always increase slowly. . karen

Fiesty, In the 5 weeks since I was away from my horses the people I left in charge of them upped the hay quantities(unlimited) and decreased the grain greatly. All of my horses (appy, morab, qh) kept their weight pretty steady except for 2 thoroughbreds that I have. I don't know if it is true for all tb's but it was for mine. Now I'm slowly raising their feed back up to what is was. Rainsong

Thanks K :-) I was told he was not on "grain", but on "pellets" that should not cause any issues. You are the second person to tell me about beet pulp so I will have to look into that. Is it true that TBs have trouble keeping weight on with just hay? Hi there. What type of feed is he on? Does it have a lot of molasses or sugar in it? Sometimes that can be it. I have t-breds, they were all being silly the other day, and I thought they could be feeling the warmer weather and knowing spring is just around the corner. Is it possible to have his hay rations increased to help with the weight? (Or beet pulp is a good one too.) Cheers, K

Hi All, Over the last few weeks my barn has upped my horse's (OTTB) feed as he was starting to lose weight. Since that time, he has gone from mild to wild. I am being told it is a change in the weather, however my boy was fine during very cold and windy days with plastic bags and even a box blowing by. I am thinking it is the feed. Any advice? Thanks :-) FiestyFilly in PA
