Try rubbing DMSO on the hock, some people don't believe in this but I do and have had great results. I keep it on hand and have even used it on myself. My mother used to have arthritis in her little finger but we had a dog whos back would go out, she would rub it on the dog and forget to wear gloves sometimes (directions will say to use gloves when using it) she would realized her finger would not hurt as bad when she didn't wear the gloves, so she stopped wearing them and in time had no pain. This was 10 plus years ago and only once in a while her finger will hurt alittle, she just gets the DMSO out and will use it a few times and will be pain free for a long time (months even a year) Hope this helps, Good luck! Mimi :)

I have a 4 year old show mare that has osteoarthritis in her hock. We did 3 rounds of injections into the hock and 3 rounds of extracorporeal shock wave therapy. Have had phenomenal results. The shock wave therapy aids the fusion process along. We're not back to performance level, but she has come along so well and doing fantastic. The shock wave therapy is expensive, but worth every dime of you can afford it! Good luck!! Jodi

..tks for the great advise.....you both give me hope! No..I didn't have the Legend injected directly into hock. What were the 3 cotisones that you give?? My horses' hock is noticably larger than the other hock. To be honest the one vet didn't think she would benefit from any cortisone shots. So I had another vet give her the shot. I didn't think massage or chiroprator would help since it is arthritis and she dosen't seem to be in pain anywhere else. But...I will certainly consider it now. tks again...appreciate your advise... My horse has arthritis in the hock. She is only 12yrs old. She has had it for a year now. I have had it exrayed and gave her a shot of Legend. Vet said to work her lightly, which I have. She is not a barrel horse and I certainly don't do sliding stops either! She tends to lay down and then sometimes will have a problem getting up and will need help getting her up. I just put the halter on and gently pull and she gets up right away. I live in the city so really hard to go out and check on her and give her glaucosimine every day. And ...where I keep her the fellow works and he is too busy and leaves early morning and home late at night to make sure she is up and okay. I have been riding her regularly, at least 2 - 3 times a week, but with winter here I really worry about her getting down and not being able to get up. She doesn't seem to be any worse..other than she doesn't want to lift her foot...the farrier said it was all in her head... Rather than fighting with her we have given her a light tranquilizer. I know about the little bones fusing and that it can take awhile for that process, but just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. The vet said that it is very common...just some horses have it worse than others. He also said that like people, she will have good days and bad days and to give her 'bute when I do a long ride. Putting her in a stable is an option but a very expensive one that I really can't afford at this time... I would love to hear your comments or suggestions. tks much....Buffy
