Somewhere in my brain comes a comment from Calamity about the same thing years ago?

Have heard of it...have seen it.... sometimes they take the tail and sell the hair to make a fake one - sometimes it's done out of spite (ie: a show horse that's doing well), and sometimes another horse will simply chew the other's tail off.

I live in Arizona and at one time this was happening to horses at the stable where I used to board. We were told it was native american indians that were cutting tails and manes to use the hair for kachina dolls and horsehair pottery. But if turned out with other horses there could be a tail chewer in the group.

So sorry for you and your sweet mare. There are a number of reasons someone would do sucha nasty thing besides downright maliciousness...reenactors and cosplayers like horse tails as props for battle gear and not knowing where to acquire said item take advantage of docile equines devistating the owner and equine victims. Also the bow used on string instruments (violin, cello, etc) are made of horse hair...particularly white. Be sure to provide her with adequate "swatting" by tying something to her remaining tail portion, suggest strips of sheet or toweling, possibly a shortened tail bag just long enough for her to defend herself.

In late April, someone cut off my horse's tail with a knife, 2" below the bone! North central Ohio area. She is a friendly mare and she had the most beautiful tail. Other horses were not bothered. Has anyone else had this experience?
