I am with horsechic on this. There is a product that used to be called "Larry's" It has another name now, but it is all natural. You can use the spray on yourself. I got sick from swipe one time. It had to be mixed with water because it was concentrated. I spilled some of the mixed solution in the summer and got sick cleaning it up. That was the last time I used a chemical on my horses. Figured if it made me sick, what was I doing putting in on my horses. I would go with any of the solutions rather than the chemical ones.

Personally, I would try everything under the sun before going the chemical route.... Ultimately the more toxins in and on your horses body the more attractive they will become to flies and gnats as they try to detox. Plus theres the stress to your horses immune system and if it gets on his skin (which is how it works) it could cause it's own reactions.
That said... you gotta do what you gotta do and in a really, really bad flea yr I'll use it on my dogs, but I look at it for what it really is.... poison

Thanks everyone! Trying a bit of all solutions. My vet gave me Frontline. One spray on chest & one on booty. Anyone familiar with this stuff??

I think that something topical or taken internally will be a short term fix for the problem, but perhaps that is all you can do. If the gnat problem is on your own property, there are natural gnat predators you can put out that interupt the gnat cycle -- they should significantly reduce the problem or even eliminate the problem.

I use a mixture of equal parts dawn dish soap, apple cider vinegar and water. It works so well for all bugs that I was able to take off the fly sheet and mask. Its inexpensive and I don't have to apply it every day.
I put melaluca or tree tree oil in her ears as well as drops on her face and under the chin where I don't want the soap solution.

Fishermen have carried vanilla extract in their tackle boxes for years for gnats. I put drops of it in my skin so soft bottle.

Thanks Holly...just so I'm clear - you're talking about WIPE the product... I was thinking it was some citronella wipe-on you were talking about. Might actually still have some in my barn!!

Was chatting with some other horsewomen, and dawnsdreamer told me that she thinks you can find it at horse.com . . . Country Supply.

I've seen the old WIPE in a catalog, I think. I know the local feed store doesn't have it. Maybe Valley Vet or one of the other horse catalogs?
I'd Google it :) I think the Piranha stuff is like it only water-based, but the oil-based will stay on. Maybe mix Piranha with baby oil?

Where can you get it Holly?
