I suspect if any horse was put on a jumping program, he would be too tired to continue it in his leisure time, unless the behavior is for any of the other issues/reasons mentioned in other posts, ie lonely, boredom or evens bees etc. It is a sign of talent in this area & should be treated as such. Sorry if you are a western rider lol or better yet, learn to jump. It is fun. If the owner doesn't want to, maybe there is a local pony club that may want to take this on. One of the TWHs that did this belongs to Sue Tobin, a saddle fitter & side saddle expert in CT. The other is a top jumper & his owner is quiet about his breed. She insists her riders only walk or canter him when showing him. Part of the reason this is done is the she has issues with TWHBEA (don't we all!) who want to use him for publicity about the TWHs versatility & the other is the general mindset of people who think that TWHs are only good for gaitin' + so many people think all TWH owners torture their horses with pressure shoeing, soring, chains etc (No way, mine are barefoot). Check out You Tube, TWH jumping

Jaq, I hope your hotwire works. The one I had was a "boarder" and was seperated from my mares as he chewed at the tails. I will add he was an orphan. Good luck!!!

If he gives you too much grief, sell him to a hunter/jumper lol or start him on a jumping program. Seriously, some of my hunter/jumper friends have bought their mounts when someone has mentioned that they have or know a horse that does this. I know this in two cases where the horses have been TWHs, go figure!

Thanks, all - this is a yearling that's jumping for no good reason (or, so it seems). It's looking like hotwire is pretty much the immediate answer until we figure out what's going on in his head.

I am sold on ElectroBraid electric fence. Far as I know none of mine, even the stallion, have ever even gotten close to it, much less touched it. I have 4 strands, up to 5 feet high with a solar charger. posts can be easily up to 50' apart. Good Luck! susie

I have worked with several on this issue and the key is finding out WHY they jump.... is there a buddy they are missing? are they in too cramped quarters? are they looking for their past partner(owner)? is there something nearby that is frightening to them? it could be lots of reasons and once that is established, it could be part of the key to the answer.......

Maybe a bigger area if possible. Never had a fence opener, but I do have one that can open gates. But he only does that to get to greener pastures. Good luck.
