I put it in my chicken houses. Helps with all kinds of buggy things and dries out the litter.

LOL Cloudy. Pretty funny. Luvs - I sure don't miss all the bugs in Missouri. Born and raised there, left in 1980. Now no fleas, no slugs, and most of those awful egads of creepy crawlers. Oh how could I forget no humidity either. :-) That does sound pretty gross (a piepan full of dead gooey slippery slimy slugs.... ymmmmmmm Is there any feedback on the Red Lake brand of DE? That is what is sold in our local Big R in Redmond. How else can it be fed besides in grain? My horse has enuf vim and vinegar without grain. HDG

Luvs, that's wrong sooo many ways!!! :o( Slugs like to party, too, and without any arms or legs, they can't swim.... Another example of a good time gone bad. It's just wrong......

I've used the DE for 'slugs' in and around the garden and house - supposedly, the crushing process leaves it in 'shards' and when the slugs crawl over it, it pierces their skin and they die! Also on the matter of slugs (we've had a BUNCH of them) - put a pie pan (get the throw-away kind) and pour about 1" of beer in it - set near where slugs live - in the morning you'll have a pan FULL of slugs. It's pretty nasty, thats why I suggest the throw-away pans. Fly control...I use the Fly Predators. For each one fly larvae they destroy, that equals about 1,000 flies not born - doesn't take much math to figure out this works!! Dunno anything that will ensure you have NO flies!! Allowing the barn swallows to nest in your barn helps, too! They get used to you...and won't dive-bomb ya much!!

This is a great product! Just remember to get the "food grade" type. Also it cannot be used in conjunction with the fly predators. I use diatomaceous earth in the fall & winter and the fly predators in the spring & summer along with a good year round de-worming program and of course, good pasture management. There are some really good post and links regarding this product.

Diatomaceous Earth How It Kills........... The sorbtive dust pierces the protective outer structure of the parasite. They dry out and pass harmlessly through the digestive system. INSECTICIDAL DUST In the home, Diatomaceous Earth can be applied in wall voids, attics and other out-of-the-way places to kill insects such as ants, cockroaches, dry wood termites and many other insects. It can be sprinkled on carpets to kill fleas. DE can also be fed to animals to control intestinal parasites, where its mode of action is probably a mild scouring effect. It is also used as a border around vegetable and ornamental beds to discourage slugs and snails. PROTECTING ANIMALS Diatomaceous Earth kills cockroaches, ants, earwigs, silverfish, beetles, slugs, and other crawling insects. It is a mechanical insect killer that is not toxic or poisonous. Insects cannot become immune to its action. Insects come in contact or ingest this powder and die within 48 hours. It's non-toxic to pets and children. Diatomaceous Earth will not hurt earthworms or beneficial soil microorganisms. It is one of the few pesticides in the world classified as non-toxic. It can be used as a dust against fleas, lice and other external pests on pigs, dogs, cats and chickens. Use full strength as a talcum powder to rub into dog and cat coats and in dusting boxes for chickens. University of California researcher I.B. Tarshis reported great success using sorptive dusts to control fleas on cats and several breeds of dogs. He used a small bulbous duster or his hands to apply 1 oz of dust on cats and small dogs and 2 oz on larger dogs. After treating the pet, apply Diatomaceous Earth to areas where the pet sleeps or roams. Thoroughly powder all sides of the pet’s bedding, including boxes or baskets where the pet sleeps. Diatomaceous Earth is also used as an animal wormer by adding it to feed. The action is strictly mechanical. GRAIN STORAGE DE has replaced chemicals such as malathion in the prevention of insect damage to stored grains and seeds at some grain and flour mills. The most effective protection will be achieved if grain or seed is treated immediately after harvest by lightly coating all kernals with dust. The moisture content of the grain should first be adjusted to not over 12% by weight. The recommended dosage of DE is 7 lbs/ton of grain. Barley, buckwheat, corn, oats, rice, rye, sorghum wheat and mixtures of these grains may be treated in this manner. LAWN APPLICATION As a lawn insecticide, DE will control grubs, chinch bugs, cut worms and other insects. Apply about 1 lb of dust per 50 sq. ft of lawn several times a year. METAL POLISH Diatomaceous Earth can be mixed with water to make a paste that is a very effective metal and glass polish, particularly silver. CONCRETE ADDITIVE The addition of 2 -3 parts of Diatomaceous Earth to 100 parts of cement will make concrete more plastic, more easily pumped and more uniform. Additionally, Diatomaceous Earth is used as an additive for paint and rubber products, in the manufacture of the tiles on the space shuttle, and its absorbing properties are used in dynamite. SUGGESTED FEEDING DOSES Beef Cattle 1% by weight of dry ration Calves 4 grams in morning milk Dairy Cattle 1% by weight of dry ration Cats ½ teaspoon / day Horses ½ - 1 cup in daily ration Chickens 5% in feed Large Dogs 1 tablespoon / day Small Dogs 1 teaspoon / day Goats 1% in grain Sheep 1% in ground grain
