I just bought the most awesome "exterminator" for burrowing rodents-- A simple device "gopher canon" hooks to a propane tank and Oxygene tank. It looks like a weed burner of sorts with a little extra kick. You simply stick the end down the hole of the varmint open the valve (which let's propane and O2 into the tunnel) then the satisfaction comes when you press the ignition switch which literally sparks the gas blowing the pests to well &*((. If only Bill Murray knew of this his whoas would of ended sooner. I can wipe out 80 acres tunneling pests in less than an hour at a cost of 1 gal of propane and O2.
It does give great satisfaction when you push the ignition switch......
"come on over Mr Gopher anytime!"

The chlorine gas from the bleach works the same as the carbon-monoxide from the exhaust. Plus, the scent from the bleach will stay in that section of the tunnel, acting as a warning to the mole.
Chlorine gas will poison the moles almost immediately, so it doesn't have to stay long, in any case. Yet, the scent of the bleach will remain, continuing to force the moles to find other quarters. Regardless of how many remain alive, the good part is, if you use the generic brand, works out pretty cheap.

Great topic! I have the same problem in eastern OK with gophers. Two yrs. back I used the peanuts in the runs (poked a hole with a pipe with gloves on & poured 'em in), took the better part of a day, and got ride of all of them -or so I thought. They came back the next year (I think from my neighbor). Now I have twice as many holes! I will try the peanuts again (hate the poison in my pasture.)
As for the gum, a friend told me to use juicy fruit. Don't touch the gum with your fingers, just open and drop in a hole. I guess they can't digest it. She said it works great, but I could go broke buying gum!!
"BS!" Be sure and let us know if you find a good solution.

Jacquie,
I'm in northeast Texas and have a real problem with "pocket gophers"... some people call em moles, salimanders and other names unmentionable. I don't know if that is what you are having trouble with or not. The gophers make a mound where they come up out of the ground. They have a long tunnel system with a main tunnel and numerous T's off the main tunnel. The large mound causes me the most trouble, dulling the mower blades on the lawn mowers and the hay cutter in the haymeadows. So, I buy the Decon Rat Poison. When I see a new mound, find the tunnel and drop 5 or 6 of the pellets inside and cover it up. It'll get rid of em but you have to stay up with them. No matter how many you get rid of, they'll come back... it's a constant battle. My dog likes to catch them and is purdy good at it... which causes a problem if he eats one that has ingested the rat poison. He wil yak em up and be kinda puny for a day or so, but he's still out there catching more. I've never heard of, or tried the bubble gum. I might try that myself. The chlorine bleach would probably just soak into the sand and not last long enough to air nuke em. One other idea used by an old friend. Connect a hose from the exhaust pipe of any gas motor, find a tunnel and gas em with exhaust, ie: carbon monoxide. They just go to sleep... It's easier to use rat poison.
Good luck!

Jacquie, i had a prollem with moles, once upon a time, in a land far, far away...well, in East Texas. And nope, I dint bring your'n with me.
Any how, someone told me about the mothballs, so to do one better, I used bleach. 1 cup in each hole. The chlorine is heavier than air, so will seek the lowest level. After a couple of weeks...never saw anymore holes.
Either it got'em...or they got tikked off an moved to north texas!! LOL

Thanks to those of you that offered some advice about the moles in the yard. I also heard from someone that can't post on the board that shoving a mothball down each mound works really well. I'll give the remedies a try, and hope something works. Moving isn't an option, I bought this place, and I ain't leaving Texas. I did notice that there were no moles last year, the ground was real hard and dry from the draught. We've had some rain, and now the grubs/moles are flourishing again.

If you cant ride can you tag along? I understand about roping in the blood but its bad when you get ropng, penning, cutting and all the rest going at the same time. I have determined as I get older, I need one fantastic horse that can do it all. Like me he may not be real good at anyone thing but can at least hold my head up on most horse things.
John Black, a roper won the last one with an *. So ropers do have a good shot at it even though it is expanded for this one. We are proud that John is proud to list in his accomplishments, winning the Circle G Xtreme race. Neither he nor I mention that I could't compete because it was my race. But when we did the pick up race after the official one, I did beat him. But between just you and I we keep that under our hat. So tell your guy to load up that roping/penning horse and come on up and have a good time. Its fun, it helps some kids that need a little helping and we keep making new friends.
Most don't realize it but one of the best riders comes down from Okla and gets close to smoking the whole bunch of us and she does it on a borrowed horse. If she ever gets on one that she knows, I have a feeling we will all be looking at the back of her red head.

lol rancher, if the moles find us here in Texas, guess we'll have to keep Alaska in mind! I hate those little monsters!
I've been keeping an eye on your festivities up there and would sure like to make it. I'm sidelined still from my recent surgery but hubby isnt! I put him on my best penning horse, got him team penning (he thought he was a die hard roper) last year...he loves it and is pretty darn good at it! We even won the fall series down near San Antonio which gave him the bug even more! He wont give up roping tho... I'd sure like to get my fingers back in WT's barbecue sauce and Roadhoss's grub again!
Thanks for the invite.
