A friend and I were using the feed in the trailer method to get her horse to load. It worked so well that the horse started to sleep in the trailer. Gail

Clinton Anderson teaches the most effective technique I've seen. I suggest you attend one of his clinics or get his tape. Good luck.

I just saw this on Animal Planet (cable TV) a day or two ago; a trainer in England had 5 impossible horses loading in under 2 hours. As someone else said, it was all about leading. She worked with each horse until it could be lead over a blue plastic tarp on the ground. Then proceeded to the trailer. I just finished a book called The Body Language of Horses; a relevant tip is, when the horse refuses to do something, go back to the last activity you were successful with. The original poster mentioned that the horse could be lead everywhere else; try going through a whole progression of leading scenarios, using the same cue for forward, and finally work on the trailer. It would probably help if the trailer and horse were left in a pasture or turnout regularly, along witht the idea of feeding in the trailer. Leaving no stone unturned ... there might be an odor of some kind in the trailer that the horse doesn't like.

I taught my horse to load in about 2 minutes. I simply held a can of ALPO in front of him and read him the ingredients. Not only did he load ... he began to hook-up the trailer whenever I arrived at the barn.

I once observed a renowned Horse Whisperer load an unwilling horse. The horse was dancing all over the place and generally making quite a fuss. The whisperer-guy got ahold of the horse's head and literally whispered something in it's ear. I swear, the horse looked right at him and then calmly and quietly went right into the trailer! Amazed, I asked the horse whisperer what he said to the horse. "Simple he replied, I just told the horse I was Pro-Slaughter"...>monte<

Make it become the horses Idea to go in the trailer work a circle away from the trailer make it as uncomfortable as possible for him. when he is near the trailer take all preasure off the only time you give him a break is at the trailer and before you know it he will step up now when he does dont whip him and try to make him go in let him rest there if he doesnt go in after you left him rest for about 30 seconds ask him back and repeat once he finds out he can rest at the trailer he will jump in now dont close the gate on him when he does go in if he choses to come out put preasure back on and start circling him when he comes near the trailer take the preasure off again and he will run in and be glad to be in the trailer Good luck True
